Hungarian Parliament Tour Tips

The Hungarian parliament building in Budapest is over 100 years old and is a gorgeous example of neo-classical architecture. If you are wondering about the best things to do in Budapest consider going on a Hungarian Parliament Tour.

Parliament in Budapest

It is the largest parliament building in Europe; and the largest building in Hungary. In fact, the Hungarian Parliament is so huge that the weak soil along the Danube had to be reinforced with a concrete foundation seven feet deep when it was built in the 1880s.

Getting Hungarian Parliament Tour Tickets

The only way to get inside the building, unless you are planning on becoming a Hungarian politician, is to take an organized tour. Tours take place at specific times throughout the day and you should plan to get your ticket in advance.

For example, English-language tours take place at 10am, 12pm and 2pm.

It is advisable to arrive early at around 8am when the ticket office opens, as the tickets will sell out within a few hours and you need to use the ticket on the day that you get it.

The line for tickets starts by the security fence in front of the parliament at gate X. The system for getting tickets can be very confusing and is not signposted or explained well, so don’t be shy about asking people who look like they know what they’re doing to help you.

You can also book your ticket online in advance and simply show a printout of your booking confirmation to the security guard when you arrive – which will also help you avoid any long queues.

Things to See on a Tour of the Hungarian Parliament

Before you go inside the building, look at the Gothic carvings along the front — there are 88 different statues that represent past military commanders and rulers of Hungary.
The Hungarian Crown Jewels are kept under the cupola of the parliament, so these will likely be a highlight of your tour.

Other Tips for Going on a Hungarian Parliament Tour

  • Do book ahead if you want to take a tour with a large group.
  • Do bring your passport as ID; EU members get in free.
  • Don’t be noisy or disrespectful; this is a very important building.
  • Don’t wander away from the tour, often Parliament will be in session and you could wander into somewhere you should not be and cause a disruption.
